Radish cultivation is gaining ground in Almeria, Spain. Despite the increase in production, it's still not as popular as other crops, such as peppers or tomatoes. However, there's been a turning point for this crop in the last five years, with production tripling. According to recent data from the Ministry of Agriculture, by the end of August, the region had produced a record ton of radishes shattering previous records.
Radish is experiencing a golden moment in the province, as its production stood at 1,050 tons surpassing the annual total of 0.636 tons in 2023. This is a remarkable increase from 2019, the pre-pandemic year when the province only produced 0.275 tons. The pandemic seems to have boosted the interest and production of this crop in Almeria.
The area devoted to this crop has also increased, reaching 70 hectares in August 2024, i.e. almost twice as much as last year. This is the province's largest recorded area dedicated to radish, which could indicate an upward trend in the coming years.
Huelva used to be Andalusia's leading radish producer; a trend that Almeria is reversing, positioning itself as the region's leader. This change highlights the ability of Almeria's agricultural sector to adapt and grow radishes.
