Portugal: Mercadona starts works on what will be its first supermarket in the city of Lisbon
Mercadona is advancing in its expansion plan in Portugal, where it has started the construction of a supermarket in Alta de Lisboa, planned to open in 2025, and which will be the first in the city of Lisbon. The company currently has five supermarkets in the greater Lisbon area: two in Sintra, one in Oeiras, one in Alverca, and another in Torres Vedras. On 24 October, it will open what will be its third store in Sintra (Rio de Mouro), ending 2024 with six stores in the district.

German shoppers save on reduced-priced goods
Bad apples and blemished bananas are not putting off German shoppers, who 'consciously' buy products about to expire, in order to save money. In a new survey commissioned by Kaufland, the German supermarket chain, one in two people knowingly buys products with best-before dates that are about to expire. One in four regularly buys fruit and vegetables with minor blemishes, while eight out of ten then feel guilty when food ends up in the trash - although 86% admitted that food was chucked in with their household waste because it had started to smell bad.

France: Carrefour launches the change of brand of Cora stores
Finalized last July, the acquisition of the distributor Cora by Carrefour enters a new phase with the gradual transition of the 60 stores under their new brand. Meanwhile, the group is making progress in selling its Polish business and has completed a strategic review of its Swiss business as it eyes its positioning in the European market. In a trading update for the 47 weeks to 23 August 2024, the group said that the sale of its Polish division was well underway and awaiting regulatory approval. UK: Aldi introduces HVO-powered trucks to its fleet
Aldi is converting more than 30% of its fleet of owned HGVs to operate on hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) fuels. The move is taking place on more than 160 HGVs based at its Cardiff, Swindon, and Neston distribution centers, and is expected to reduce the supermarket's carbon footprint by approximately 15,432 tonnes of CO2e per year.

Amazon to open nine warehouses on Long Island by 2025
Amazon plans to open its ninth warehouse on Long Island next year, a big jump from the two locations it had just four years ago.
