Glencoe-Silver Lake Public Schools opened up a long-discussed new greenhouse building on the east side of their Glencoe campus. The greenhouse was built over the summer by A.J. Lauer, Inc. of Farmington and subcontracted work was completed by Rickert Excavating, Kunkel Electric, Mikolichek Plumbing and Heating, and Flatworks Concrete Construction.
The building cost nearly $300,000 to build with Stevens Seminary Foundation designated as the primary supporter of the project, providing $158,000 in funds for the greenhouse. "They knew this construction was beyond the scope of the school district budget so that's why when we approached them they said, 'Yes, we'll give you so much' and then they actually increased that amount because they wanted to see it happen just to help the kids because they're all about educating kids and how can we make this happen," Glencoe-Silver Lake Public Schools Business Manager Michelle Sander said.
"It's kind of been this far-off vision like we need a bigger greenhouse, we've always had just a small greenhouse attached to the building that was pretty much used just by the science classes."
