VBT figures week 38

Lettuce prices doubles in one week

In week 38, the average price for aubergines at the VBT rose to €2.65 per kilogram. Prices also increased for green zucchini (€0.51 per piece), green bell peppers (€1.54 per kilogram), and lettuce (just under €1.10 per head). This marks a doubling of the price for lettuce in just one week.

A price of more than €1 per head of lettuce has been unprecedented in recent years at the Federation of Belgian Horticultural Cooperatives (VBT) auctions. The last time the price reached the €1 mark was in week 4 of 2019. Earlier this spring, lettuce prices were high for a few weeks, but the €1 threshold was not crossed. Other types of lettuce also saw price increases last week.

Tomato prices remained stable compared to the previous week, with loose tomatoes at €1.12 and vine tomatoes at €1.03 per kilogram. The hoped-for autumn price recovery to offset the weak prices has yet to materialize.
