Tomato prices in August were disappointing. That is the mood in the trade and is also shown by figures on the European Tomato Dashboard. Prices for loose and truss were lower than in July, and also more than 10 percent lower than in August 2023. The only exception is France, where prices moved higher than last year.
Tomato prices did rise recently, but the question is whether that can compensate for the summer dip.
Most painful are the figures from Spain. There, prices also dropped below the five-year average. This does not apply to the Netherlands, Italy, and France, the other countries on the dashboard.
Despite lower prices than last August, prices for loose, truss, and especially/cherry in the Netherlands are still above the five-year average. That means prices averaging 70 euro cents for truss, 76 euro cents for loose, and over 2.13 euros for a kilo of specialty or cherry.
Across the board, that results in an average kilogram price of 1.28 euros per kilo in August. That is slightly higher than the five-year average of 1.21 euros, but well below last summer's 1.42 euros.
