Energy prices may be lower than during the height of the energy crisis, but energy taxes are increasing. This creates excellent profitability for investments in sustainable energy innovations. Rudy Daniëls, director of DSNRG, provides an example for greenhouse growers.

Natural gas savings
DSNRG, formerly known as Daniëls Smart Energy BV, specializes in sustainable energy solutions, including waste combustion systems. One such system for greenhouses burns crop waste, such as from pepper or tomato production, reducing natural gas consumption by 1.2 million cubic meters. In an example calculation, this saves the Dutch grower €393,000 annually—€288,000 from gas savings, €100,000 from reduced waste disposal costs, and €3,000 from selling combustion byproducts.
Energy taxes are projected to rise significantly. For example, in a greenhouse using 4 million cubic meters of gas annually, taxes will increase from €300,000 in 2024 to over €800,000 by 2030. Despite costs of €59,000 annually, the net profit of €334,000 per year means the €1.4 million investment in the waste combustion system has a payback period of just over four years.
Daniëls believes waste combustion has great potential for greenhouse growers alongside other renewable technologies like solar panels and heat pumps. He encourages businesses to assess the best fit for their operations.
