Russian villagers protest against greenhouses

Residents of the village of Kuvarshino in Krasnoyarsk Krai, Russia, have been raising concerns for several years about large-scale greenhouse operations that they say are threatening the local environment. According to the villagers, the proliferation of greenhouses has created numerous problems. Many plots of land have been leased for up to 50 years, and the tenants appear to show little regard for the environmental impact. The greenhouses grow vegetables such as cucumbers and tomatoes, using chemical crop protection to boost yields.

One of the biggest concerns is the unchecked use of water resources for irrigation, which the villagers say has led to the disappearance of local lakes. "In addition, greenhouse owners are accused of failing to properly dispose of waste, including plastic sheeting, leaving it behind without proper disposal."

Residents also complain about the smell of coal, manure, and pesticides, which they say has made living in the village unbearable. A further threat comes from dogs abandoned after the harvest season. "These animals become aggressive and have attacked livestock." Villagers claim that the business owners ignore their complaints and are solely focused on profits, without considering the environmental impact or public health.
