Belgian tomato exports to hot southern Europe

After a weak summer for tomatoes and aubergines, prices are finally recovering. Boerenbond makes that observation after looking at last week's VBT figures. One points to moderate summer weather at the beginning of the summer as the cause. It caused reduced demand.

Compared to last year, there is also less pressure on the price because there is less stress around ToBRFV, thanks to the planting of more resistant varieties, Boerenbond's update also quotes. Another factor pointed out is extreme heat in southern Europe that damaged tomato production there. "This is currently even resulting in export of our tomatoes to the South."

Prices for vine tomatoes are around €0.70/kg, and for loose tomatoes around €1/kg. While these are good prices, they do not yet compensate for the difficult season so far.

An increase in demand is also pointed to as the reason for the high cucumber prices. Holidaymakers returned.
