NewBreed responsd to a research report by Bayer on whether or not the choice of rootstock affected the ToBRFV symptoms in a susceptible scion. "Rootstock... has no significant effect on ToBRFV", the report concluded (Hortidaily, 27 August 2024).
Well, Israeli breeding company NewBreed begs to differ.

"NewBreed has been testing and selling our ToBRFV resistant rootstock called Yogev for the past three years. The results make us proud to offer ToBRFV resistance of rootstocks and scions that improve tomato productivity."
"We found that the "old" TMV resistance gene, TM1, confers resistance to ToBRFV. Fifty years ago, TM1 was introduced to tomato to confer resistance to TMV. TM1 was later replaced with TM2 that provides much better protection against TMV. As a result, no modern hybrids carry TM1."
NewBreed re-introduced TM1 to cherry, cluster, single fruits hybrids and rootstocks. "Now we have a family of resistant hybrids in genetic backgrounds that maximize the TM1 protection against ToBRFV which is known to persist in soils. When susceptible tomato hybrids grow in virus infected soils on susceptible rootstocks, ToBRFV replicates and spreads. When resistant hybrids are grafted on a susceptible infected rootstocks the resistance of the scion can break down and the plants develop symptoms (Figure).""
