The market has been fluctuating in recent weeks, especially when it comes to bell peppers, but interest in vegetables seems to have picked up over the past few days. "We produce cucumbers, bell peppers, and eggplants thanks to the greenhouses we have set up in recent months. It covers 6 hectares in total, which is proving to be a very good investment," explains Christopher Bernardi, sales manager at Ortofrutta Bernardi.
The harvesting of eggplants and cucumbers started in June, and that of bell peppers started a few weeks ago. The are different packaging formats, ranging from 2 kg mini-packs to cardboard trays, plastic trays, and 1 kg trays, depending on customer needs.
"Our productions are zero residue," echoes Francesco Fabbri, the company's technical manager, "which requires us to carry out strict checks to anticipate any disease or insect infestation. We work hard on prevention to avoid any problems towards harvest time. We also manage irrigation very carefully with probes, to avoid waste."
In years like this one, characterized by high temperatures lasting over 40 days, managing these crops is not easy. "I would indeed say it is very complicated," Fabbri continues, "because there is no difference between day and night and the plants risk going into stress. Special agronomic precautions are needed."
The sales market at the moment is mostly the Italian one. "We have noticed a certain liveliness over the past few days and we are pleased that our customers have realized what is behind the Bernardi brand," concludes Christopher.
