Andalusia's greenhouse watermelon has reached its second-best price in the last ten seasons

In the 2023/2024 season, Andalusia's watermelon sector achieved its second-highest average prices in the last decade, according to a report by Hortoinfo based on data from the Price and Market Observatory of the Andalusian Regional Government. The average price paid to producers for all types of watermelon was 0.51 euros per kilo, only surpassed by 0.64 euros per kilo in the 2021/2022 campaign. This price was 27.5% higher than in the previous season when it didn't exceed 0.40 euros per kilo.

These average prices paid to producers for delivery to the warehouse or marketing company do not include VAT, handling costs, product marketing, and commercial commissions corresponding to the data collected by the Andalusian Observatory up to the end of July, pending adjustments based on the marketing companies' latest data.

The price of mini watermelon, which initially generated great expectations because its size is more convenient for consumption, has not taken off and remains at the bottom of the ranking compared to other types of watermelon. This season's average price stood at 0.43 euros/kilo, i.e. 22.86% more than last season's 0.35 euros/kilo average price.

The black watermelon's average price increased to 0.57 euros per kilo in the 2023/2024 season, i.e. 29.55% higher than the 0.44 euros per kilo of the previous season.

Finally, the average price of striped watermelon in the 2023/2024 season stood at 0.54 euros per kilo, 31.71% more than the 0.41 euros per kilo average price it had in the previous campaign.
