Shorter supply keeps red pepper pricing strong

Green and red pepper supply out of California is seeing steady production. "Our chilis, which are grown in Baja, Mexico, are steady also–those are coming up out of Fresno," says Jay Angulo of Baloian Farms, adding that yields on peppers look fairly similar to last year at this time.

While production is happening in central California, one challenge at this time of year is all the local pockets of production happening across the country. "That kind of hurts distribution a bit for us but overall, things are still moving pretty well," said Angulo. "Demand on green peppers is about normal while red pepper has very high demand. There hasn't been a lot of supply of red pepper so there is increased demand there." Chili peppers are also seeing strong demand.

Late fall production transition
Looking ahead, production will stay steady in this region until the end of October–after that time, production on green peppers transitions to the desert region, while chili peppers will transition at the end of October and red pepper production will stay in central California until almost Thanksgiving.

As for pricing, it too is steady and similar to last year though red pepper pricing is strong–almost to historic price levels.

Meanwhile, Baloian Farms recently unveiled a new look to its online presence via a newly designed website that the company says better reflects its mission, core values, and the company's farming history.
