Canada: Fusarium causing a large amount of loss of pepper plants

There is a shortage of Canadian greenhouse bell peppers throughout the industry. "This is mainly due to fusarium causing a large amount of loss of pepper plants," says Ray Mastronardi, vice president of sales for Del Fresco PureĀ®. "Compared to last year, the bell pepper supply is down, mainly due to fusarium but we're meeting the fill rates through B.C. and the Netherlands as they are in good supply."

Along with those two regions, supply is also coming out of Leamington, Ontario (Canada). Meanwhile, in addition to local field red peppers, which are more plentiful, California has industry field production.

Earlier end to season
As for the timing of the season, it did begin on time with an ample amount of product. However, the season will end earlier this year, due to disease, at the end of October-early November. Typically, the season ends in late November.

Meanwhile, demand is steady for bell peppers, though typically there is a dip in demand strength in August. "Consumption of bell peppers every year goes up and continues to increase, especially on indoor bell peppers," says Mastronardi.

All of this means pricing is high right now because of that shortage and steady demand which is similar to last year when prices were also high due to a shortage.
