Elevated levels of nitrates and pesticides detected in greenhouse vegetables in Krasnoyarsk region, Russia

In early June, specialists from the Rosselkhoznadzor collected samples of vegetables from greenhouse farms in the Krasnoyarsk region. Laboratory tests conducted by the Krasnoyarsk branch of the Federal State Budgetary Institution "Grain Quality Assessment Center" revealed that cucumbers grown in the Berezovsky district, over an area of 73.4 hectares, exceeded the maximum permissible levels of nitrate nitrogen and imidacloprid (an active ingredient in insecticide preparations used to eliminate pest insects).

The authorities also noted that elevated nitrate levels were found in cucumbers and zucchinis cultivated in the Yemelyanovsky district, covering an area of 39.3 hectares. The excessive levels of nitrates and pesticides in these vegetables are attributed to the use of higher doses of fertilisers and violations of the regulations concerning the application of pesticides and agrochemicals.
