AU: Attendees tour tomato facility during Nursery & Garden Industry of South Australia

Alastair McLean recently hosted the Nursery & Garden Industry of South Australia providing a guided grower tour of SA Tomato, a highly automated tomato plant nursery located in Virginia SA.

Growers from across South Australia had the opportunity to see the facility up-close and learn about the whole process from selecting seed to picking fruit. Peter from SA Tomato described the complexity of the process to produce a seedling that would give his customers the best start to their Season.

SA Tomato has been operating since 1962. Peter's fixation on embracing new technology was the key to their future success and saw them become one of the first hydroponic tomato growers in Australia. After helping local growers by producing seedlings during the WA board closure, Peter transformed his growing operation into a highly automated tomato seedling production nursery. Knowing that his biggest input cost would be labor, Peter partnered with Powerplants to provide the most modern technology available from Europe including automatic equipment for seeding, grading, Rockwool hydrating, loading, spacing, irrigating, lighting & climate control. Peter is now providing high-quality grafted tomato plants to the largest tomato growers across Australia.
