Ensuring fruit and berry supply in Kazakhstan amid Russian frosts

May frosts in several Russian regions, causing significant fruit and berry crop losses, have raised concerns about food security in neighboring Kazakhstan. The Ministry of Agriculture of the Republic of Kazakhstan assures that the situation is under control.

According to Russian sources, the frosts affected more than 13,500 hectares of fruit and berry plantations. A significant reduction in the harvest of apples, cherries, plums, currants, and other crops is expected. Losses may reach 30-40%, but by imports from Turkey, Egypt, Uzbekistan, and Azerbaijan the deficit will be compensated.

Kazakh analyst Kirill Pavlov warns that the potential increase in demand for Kazakh products in Russia could impact the local market. He emphasizes the importance of a balanced approach to exports to avoid shortages in the domestic market.

However, significant changes in prices and supply volumes in Kazakhstan have not yet been observed. The Bureau of National Statistics notes only a slight price increase for some fruits and berries. The price of imported apples remains unchanged at an average of 1.2-1.4 euros per kilogram. The Bureau confirms that prices have risen only 3.3% over the month. Last year's harvest of apple prices decreased from 1.3 to 1 euro in the Zhambyl region. There is also no observed shortage. Supermarket and market shelves are filled with various varieties to suit every taste and budget.

The Ministry of Agriculture of the Republic of Kazakhstan reports that Kazakhstan produces 251,000 tons of apples, 7,800 tons of plums, and 26,000 tons of berries, which significantly cover internal needs.

The government is implementing subsidy measures to support local producers and stimulate domestic fruit and berry production. The country's industrial apple orchard area has increased from 21,700 hectares to 26,000 hectares since 2014.
