China: Tomato farming in Xinjiang with smart greenhouse technology

In Xinjiang, China, Runtai Agricultural Technology Development has launched a groundbreaking agricultural initiative. Their "smart" greenhouse in Kokdala integrates advanced technologies to cultivate tomatoes efficiently and sustainably.

Tan Yue, the executive director, highlighted the greenhouse's soilless tomato cultivation and its utilization of sensors to optimize local advantages like long daylight and temperature variations. Spanning 16 hectares, this facility operates as an intelligent agricultural park, attracting investments and employing state-of-the-art Dutch agricultural technology.

Compared to traditional methods, their approach boosts annual tomato production by 5–6 times while reducing water usage to just 1/20 of conventional levels, significantly enhancing ecological sustainability. The greenhouse adjusts irrigation based on weather conditions and plant needs, ensuring optimal growth with tailored nutrient solutions.

Digital management of the entire process has slashed costs by over 40%, demonstrating the efficiency gains of smart farming.
