Tomato market EU May moderate

NL: Green marks for Dutch cherry and specialty tomatoes

Tomato prices in the Netherlands were lower than in May last year, but higher than the five-year average. For Italy and Spain, prices here last month did lag significantly behind that five-year average. Across the board, tomato prices in Europe in May were just below the five-year average with an average kilogram price of €1.13, according to an update of the European Commission's tomato dashboard.

In particular, the price for cherry and specialty tomatoes in the Netherlands stands out on the dashboard. Over €2.13 per kilo is as much as 5% lower than in May 2023, but also 97% higher than the five-year average. The segment's popularity is also recognized in the market. At the Global Tomato Congress last month in The Hague, several speakers expressed the expectation that even more growth is possible in this segment.
