World Bee Day, May 20

Macro-sanctuary has tripled bee population

On World Bee Day, One Banana announces a significant achievement: the beehive within its macro-sanctuary, located at its natural ingredients processing plant in Guatemala, has tripled since its inception.

The "Beebox" is a unique structure designed by BeeHub to shelter over 30,000 honeybees, 900 solitary bees, and 2,000 stingless bees. In February 2023, BeeHub released a hive of 15,000 bees on One Banana's macro-sanctuary as part of the project. Following a thorough evaluation to monitor their progress, the population has far surpassed expectations.

This growth underscores One Banana's dedication to the conservation and restoration of natural habitats, leading to improved biodiversity and increased carbon storage to mitigate emissions. By nurturing vital pollinators, the company fulfills its commitment to regenerative practices and aligns with the objectives outlined in its new sustainability strategy.

Furthermore, this project contributes to the Gigaton Project's goal of reducing, avoiding, or sequestering over one gigaton of CO2e emissions, alongside other companies. Since 2023, One Banana achieved the Giga Guru status, a Walmart recognition.

"Protecting and conserving bees is crucial for preserving natural ecosystems," says Rob Adams, president of One Banana. "Our bee sanctuary project, alongside our newly attained Giga Guru status, reflects our commitment to sustainability and reaffirms our pledge to 'doing business for good', helping to preserve the planet for future generations."

Bees are vital to global ecosystems but face unprecedented threats. One Banana addresses this challenge by establishing interconnected macro sanctuaries to protect native bee species and pollinators. These sanctuaries support ecosystem restoration while promoting environmental education and community engagement.

Looking to the future, the sanctuaries will be replicated across 900 hectares of conserved forests.
