Can Dutch greenhouse horticulture still grow, or will the sector (necessarily) shrink in area? This is the subject of a public debate that's spurred by the statements of Frans Timmermans and Klaas Knot. Recent figures from Statistics Netherlands (CBS) provide insight into last year's greenhouse area in Dutch provinces.
According to statisticians, the Netherlands still has 10,151.8 hectares of glass (which was 10,636 hectares in 2022, according to the CBS). The vast majority of Dutch greenhouses can be found in the province of South Holland, 4,688.8 hectares, followed by the provinces of North Brabant, Limburg, and North Holland. The province of Groningen has the smallest greenhouse area: 70 hectares.
The WOS, a local news platform, delved into the Westland figures and also looked at the development in the 15 largest greenhouse horticulture municipalities based on recent CBS figures. The most significant area loss occurred in the municipality of Lansingerland. There is no area growth in any of the 15 municipalities, as shown in the WOS visual.
