Water levels in Mexico continue to be behind normal levels. The severity varies, depending on the state in Mexico. "Sinaloa's dam levels are 27 percent behind last year while Sonora is 33 percent behind and only at 19 percent of capacity," says Frank Camera with Delta Fresh Produce. "At one ranch, we are currently forced to make a decision on whether to continue with the colored bell pepper crop or to start steering water towards our table grapes," he shared. In general, the water shortage has an impact on volumes, causing some of the lack in production of Roma tomatoes, round tomatoes, and cucumbers out of Sinaloa. In addition to Sinaloa, the state of Sonora complements the production of Romas and cucumbers for Delta Fresh. "We anticipate having strong quality out of Sonora as the plants look healthy here in the early stages." Blueberries, watermelons, cantaloupe, zucchini, yellow squash, grey squash, green bell peppers, and table grapes will be shipped from Nogales, AZ.
Asparagus
Traditionally, Delta Fresh has mainly been a grower of tomatoes (85%) and cucumbers. More recently, the company started diversifying, and this year is an asparagus program out of San Luis Sonora. "As part of the diversification, we started a partnership with a new ranch last year, and they asked if we would be interested in growing asparagus. We looked into it and felt it was a good opportunity. It's the first year we handle this commodity, and we anticipate a decent supply for Easter," commented Camera. Harvest started last week and will continue through mid-April with the product being shipped from Yuma, AZ." In addition, Delta Fresh expects to have a good supply of round tomatoes, Roma tomatoes, zucchini, and cucumbers as well for Easter.
Melons
Melons are another relatively new addition for Delta Fresh. After a difficult fall season, Camera expects stronger pricing for spring. "For watermelons, I believe we will see stronger pricing as less acreage was planted due to the fall markets being depressed." On cantaloupes, the company debated whether or not to produce for spring due to the issues last fall. "In the end, we decided to continue growing cantaloupes for spring and with overall acreage being down, we expect to see a better market."
