CapGen Seeds, a seed breeder from Almeria, is at the forefront of research and development of new papaya varieties. The company has launched Colima F1, a low-bearing hybrid papaya. This new variety was possible thanks to the company's team of plant genetics experts' years of hard work and dedication.
Colima F1 is an evolution of the successful Caballero papaya. With Colima, the company has managed to preserve the qualities of its predecessor while introducing significant improvements in the fruit's size, flavor, and shelf life.
Colima fruits range in size from 0.8 kg to 1.2 kg, making them a good choice for markets that demand medium-sized papayas. In addition, its soluble solids have an average content of 14-15ยบ Brix. Colima's hardness confers an good post-harvest capacity, facilitating its handling and transport and expanding the producers' marketing window.
Colima F1's genetics and performance
The Colima F1 variety shares 90% of the genetics of the Caballero papaya. "This genetic continuity ensures consistency in quality and yield, while offering significant improvements in fruit size and resistance. In addition, the Colima plant has a low size, which facilitates a greater density of planting in greenhouses and increases the profitability of the crop", the developers say.
