Lobello plum cherry tomato wins Flavor of the Year award for sixth consecutive year

The plum cherry tomato variety Lobello has won the Flavor of the Year 2024 award in Spain for the sixth consecutive year. This exclusive variety from the Almeria-based company Caparrós has been gaining ground on Spanish and European shelves in the 10 years it has been on the market. This is its 11th campaign.

"This confirms our effort and commitment to position this tomato as a leader in terms of taste among Spanish consumers," says Juan Ramón París, Design and Marketing Executive at Caparrós.

The recipient of the Flavor of the Year award is decided by a panel of 100 regular Spanish consumers of this tomato category, who test and evaluate various aspects of the product, such as the texture, aroma, taste, and overall impression, among many others, giving a score in each section and providing their anonymous indications about the product.

"The Lobello's brix makes it unique to the palate. Each bite is a pleasant, sweet, and very tasty experience. The Lobello offers a perfect balance between sweet and sour, a soft and fine fleshiness and a penetrating aroma, which together with the intensity of the aftertaste it leaves in the mouth has allowed it to stand out year after year," says París.

"Those who taste it all agree that its flavor evokes the essence of what a tomato should taste like," says the marketing manager of Caparrós. "Also, one of its main achievements is that, unlike other tomato varieties, its flavor never changes, and the tomato is produced all year round. It is grown on the coast of Almeria during the fall and winter months and in the mountains, in higher areas, during the summer months," he says.

Caparrós, which is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year, produces around 18,000 tons of tomatoes a year, with its biggest bet in this category being its premium Lobello variety.

"Specialties allow a greater degree of differentiation in the markets. Our commitment to premium products like the Lobello tomato and the black seedless watermelon, which has also won the Flavor of the Year award on other occasions, is part of the company's identity," stresses París.

"Former soccer national coach for Spain and world champion Vicente Del Bosque is the sponsor of Lobello; a fact that reinforces Caparrós's values in its commitment to health and sport (Caparrós is also a sponsor of the Royal National Handball Federation), as well as the social and solidarity commitment shown through the Pedro Caparrós Foundation," he says.

The Almeria-based company also exports this product to European countries such as Germany, France, or Italy. The Lobello has also received the Superior Taste Award (with its highest rating, 3 gold stars) granted by the International Taste Institute, a world leader in terms of professional evaluation and certification, carried out by chefs, sommeliers, and experts from all over Europe, and is endorsed by the Spanish Heart Foundation in its Food and Health program.
