36,972.49 million kilos

More peppers than ever produced in 2022

According to data that Hortoinfo produced from Faostat, the statistical agency of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), in 2022, the world produced a record 36,972.49 million kilos of peppers.

This volume was produced on 2,020,816 hectares, and the average yield per square meter stood at 1.83 kilos.

The Netherlands achieved the best yields with 26.36 kilos of pepper per square meter, i.e., 282.58% more than Spain, which -despite being the third-best performing country among the top 15 largest producers in the world- only achieved a yield of 6.89 kilos per square meter and was surpassed by Poland with 13.93 kg/m².

Turkey, Egypt, and Morrocco, which also compete against Spain, produced 3.95 kg/m², 1.76 kg/m², and 5 kg/m², respectively.

It's also worth noting that China produces almost half of the world's pepper and that the top 5 largest producers (China, Mexico, Indonesia, Turkey, and Spain) account for 74.36% of the world's pepper production. China accounts for 45.47% of the world's production, Mexico produces 8.41%, Indonesia 8.17%, Turkey 8.16%, and Spain 4.14%.

The world's largest producers
China was the world's largest producer, with 16,810.52 million kilos. In 2022, China devoted 757,377 hectares to pepper production and achieved an average yield of 2.22 kilos per square meter.

China was followed by Mexico with 3,113.24 million kilos, an area of 156,718 hectares, and a yield of 1.99 kilos per square meter.

Indonesia was the world's third biggest pepper producer, with 3,020.26 million kilos, an area of 334,545 hectares, and a yield of 0.90 kilos/m².

Turkey ranked fourth with 3,018.77 million kilos, 76,398 hectares, and a yield of 3.95 kg/m².

Spain ranked fifth after producing 1,533.28 million kilos of pepper on 22,260 hectares, with an average yield of 6.89 kilos per square meter.
