Luís Mesquita Dias on the Odemira irrigation perimeter

Portugal will use seawater for irrigation in agriculture

From the 2028 agricultural harvest onwards, farmers in the Odemira irrigation perimeter will start using desalinated water. This water will be coming from a plant in Sines, being distributed through a pipeline, possibly by the sea.

Luís Mesquita Dias, president of AHSA, believes that the desalination plant project in Odemira will move forward, despite recent changes in relation to the original plan. AHSA promoted the idea of desalination in Odemira, commissioning a feasibility study from an Israeli company, due to the urgency of finding an alternative source of water, given the current restrictions on access to irrigation.

He added: “We are in an irrigation perimeter of 12,000 hectares, which currently irrigates only 5000/5500 hectares, therefore, we would have the opportunity to double the area.”
