Last week, greenhouse facilities in Ukraine began to increase selling prices for tomatoes, according to analysts from the EastFruit project. Market participants explain this situation by active demand in the context of a reduction in the supply of these products. Tomato harvesting in stationary greenhouse facilities has decreased due to cold weather in most regions of the country. In addition, cheaper tomatoes from summer greenhouses are practically unavailable for sale.
Thus, today, greenhouse tomatoes go on sale at 47-60 UAH/kg ($1.28-1.64/kg), which is, on average, 10% more expensive than at the end of the last working week. The reason for this situation, according to sellers, is the very limited supply of tomatoes on the market. Most small producers have almost completed sales and offer tomatoes only in small wholesale quantities, while the quality of such products is often low. At the same time, harvesting in stationary greenhouse facilities remains small in volume, so they also sell products in small batches.
Let us note that today, greenhouse tomatoes in Ukraine already cost, on average, 10% more than in the same period last year. Moreover, many producers declare their intention to make further attempts to increase prices in this segment next week since even after the rise in prices, the demand for tomatoes remains quite high.
