Belgium grower wants wind turbine to replace one of their CHP plants

An application by horticultural company De Glastuin on Duffelsesteenweg in Kontich to install a wind turbine with a tip height of almost 90 meters high is causing quite a stir in the neighborhood. The application was submitted this summer. "Our homes are less than 300 meters away. We are very worried about the cast shadow and noise pollution," Het Nieuwsblad quotes local residents.

Grower Wouter De Bruyn explains, "Currently, we use three natural gas cogeneration plants for heating and light. The intention is to replace one of these with a wind turbine. By 2030, CO2 emissions in the agriculture and horticulture sectors must be reduced anyway, and we have to look for alternatives. Geothermal energy via soil drilling is apparently not possible here after study, solar panels, which we already have in place, cannot cover everything."
