More red peppers next season and an above-average amount of light

The chart below, provided by Syngenta, shows the varying light levels recorded over the past week. In recent weeks, these have stayed above the multi-year average, while in weeks 30 and 31, they fell below average. In weeks 32 through 37, they stood above average.

Graph by De Lier. Cumulatively (as of January 1, 2023), we are 7% behind last year and 7% ahead of the multi-year average.

Market
In general, the production of all pepper varieties and colors grown in the Netherlands will be slightly lower than last season. Furthermore, it seems that there will be more red peppers again next season. This seems to be happening at the expense of the yellow and green pepper acreage.

Varieties
Syngenta's newest development is called Bedena (PR11592) and is a red variety with a complete resistance package, being Tm 0-3, TSWV, and mildew tolerant. Cultivation info is provided in the video below.

"After a successful introduction this season, the variety will be grown on a larger scale at several locations next season, and the acreage is expected to reach 50 hectares. A characteristic of this variety is its generative and vigorous plant type. This results in an easy setting from the beginning, with rapid fruit development and, consequently, an early production. Also, the variety has enough vigor to keep the fruit weight stable throughout the summer (180-200 grams) with sufficient quality fruit," said Teun Boomaerts. "Moreover, the variety also delivers a high production."

Gina:
Mildew tolerant.
The Gina stands out for its quality and stability in the fruit weight. That has become apparent again this season. Thanks to the variety's vigor, the fruit weight remains stable at 200 - 220 grams throughout the summer and into the fall.

Kalvin:
Kalvin has a very regular setting, and its vigor allows it to handle a high load. The fruit weighs 180 grams, which makes the variety well-suited for the packing market.

Green:
Syngenta has two green varieties, Boture and Botiful. Both are of a generative kind, which ensures a very good early production. In addition, they have enough vigor to continue producing throughout the summer and end up delivering a very good production.

The Boture has a fruit weight of 170-180 grams.
The Botiful has a fruit weight of 180 -190 grams.

Both varieties color slowly. Thus, it is possible to leave the fruits hanging on the plants a little longer and allow their weight to increase by 10-15 grams.

Yelsto
Mildew tolerant
Grown on 50 hectares this season, the Yelsto is achieving good results. In the coming year, Syngenta expects several companies to grow this variety. In fact, the Yelsto has already proven its worth in the market for several years. Sygenta states that it is a real quality bell pepper, especially during summer and autumn. The variety is generative at the start and thus produces fruit easily under low-light conditions. Towards summer, it gains more vigor, allowing the Yelsto to keep the fruits at a stable weight of 180-200 grams.

Yedda
This variety maintains a good fruit weight and diameter throughout the season. The Yedda sets quite easily after cultivation and delivers regularity in the setting and fruit weight. With a fruit weight above 220 grams, the variety also remains heavy in the second part of the season, and the fruit quality is high all season, according to Syngenta.
