State waits for Gippsland flood peaks:

Emergency warning issued for parts of Sale in Victoria's east

A new emergency warning has been issued for parts of Sale in Victoria's east, as communities around the state have to deal with the effects of days of heavy rain.

Victorians who were battling bushfires earlier in the week have today had floodwaters lapping at their doors after rivers broke their banks at Newry and nearby towns in Gippsland overnight. On Thursday afternoon, there were a number of emergency flood warnings for the state.

Just after 4 p.m., residents around the Port of Sale were warned to move to higher ground, with major flooding possible along the Thompson River. Authorities said the river was expected to pass the major flood level overnight.
