Retail offers should help correct strawberry price drop

With prices of more than eight euros per kilo at the auctions of the Federation of Belgian Horticultural Cooperatives, strawberry prices this summer were justifiably called unprecedented. Since last week, the price has dropped significantly. Low availability was behind the high prices. As a result, the high prices could only compensate growers to a limited extent.

Meanwhile, production is picking up. The trade channels that had dropped out due to the high price have not yet restarted, Michiel Vermeiren of Coƶperatie Hoogstraten points out in a conversation with VILT about the unusual market situation. The cooperative is doing its best to stimulate demand with offers in order to boost the recently collapsed price.
