A geothermal greenhouse project is being implemented in an area of 135,000 square meters in cooperation with the Zafer Development Agency, Ministry of Industry and Technology, Ministry of Youth and Sports, and Kula Municipality in order to utilize high-potential hot water resources near Sehitlioglu District in Manisa.
The goal is to start production after 4 months of construction and the government authorities are hoping that the greenhouse will set an example for the farmers in the region for greenhouse cultivation and the use of thermal resources. With the geothermal greenhouse to be established with an investment of approximately 4 million USD, 2,000 tons of tomatoes per year will be harvested and sold to the domestic and international markets.
Kula Mayor Huseyin Tosun said that they aim to evaluate the potential of the region with rich hot water resources. Pointing out that the project will bring added value to the region, Tosun said that the greenhouse will set an example for the region's agriculture and that they expect similar investments in the coming years.
Emphasizing that Kula's geothermal water has not been utilized properly for years, Tosun said: "We started a study as Zafer Development Agency, Ministry of Industry and Technology, Ministry of Youth and Sports, and Kula Municipality for the use of thermal water. Within the scope of this study, we started the installation of hydroponic technological greenhouses in an area of 5 hectares. Here, serious excavation work has begun. We have completed the work and we have come to an end. By about 4 months, this place will be completely finished, and from that point on it will contribute to the Turkish economy."
Tosun noted that the greenhouse to be operated by the municipality will make a great contribution to the district and the residents of the region. Explaining that approximately 150 people will be employed in the first stage, Tosun said, "I hope our farmers in the region will be familiarized with hydroponic production and start their own greenhouse installation. When the greenhouse starts to produce at full capacity, it will produce 2,000 tons of tomatoes annually and will make a significant contribution to the economy."
