The state generates a quarter of the national income from the sale of this vegetable

Guanajuato is the leading producer of Mexican lettuce

“For more than a decade, Guanajuato has been the leading producer of lettuce. Our product is well known at the national and international level and brings us a great economic spill,” stated Paulo Bañuelos Rosales, the secretary of Agrifood and Rural Development of Guanajuato. “In 2021, which is the last data we have, the region achieved more than 575 million pesos in profits for its lettuce sales, and our main client was the United States,” the state official said.

In 2021, Guanajuato produced 138,000 tons of lettuce. It was followed by Zacatecas with 96,097 tons and Puebla with 65,898 tons, according to data from the Agrifood and Fisheries Information Service (SIAP).

Last year, there were 6,678 hectares of this crop planted in the state, distributed in 27 municipalities, all in irrigation plots. San Miguel de Allende is the main producer with 21,996 tons, followed by Juventino Rosas with 20.80 tons and Dolores Hidalgo with 10,338 tons.

According to the SIAP, Guanajuato generates a quarter of the total national income from the sale of this vegetable. The price of the crop in the entity increased by 8.9% compared to 2020, so producers received 4,171 pesos per ton marketed.
