This spring, Gautier Semences is launching Liniac, a new variety of long green zucchinis for open field crops. “This variety is characterized by a high yield in conditions of viral pressure thanks to its resistance to 4 viruses and very good tolerance to powdery mildew, an asset to maintain a clean crop throughout the production cycle,” explains David Madiot, zucchini product line manager at Gautier Semences.
The Liniac will complete an existing range of 3 field zucchini varieties: “The Noriac, a reference variety in terms of virus resistance. The Cyriac, characterized by high early yields and ideal in short cycles, and the Zodiac, our variety with an intermediate vigor and resistance to the virus. The Liniac is presented as the versatile variety of the range, a new alternative to the other three.”
“The initial goal for this new open field zucchini was to meet a strong demand from producers for an even more productive variety,” explains Lucile Retailleau, zucchini breeder at Gautier Semences.
The research work focused on several improvement criteria. “We wanted to obtain a compact and solid plant to face climatic hazards. Plantations can thus take place from April to July. The variety has a short cycle, which gives a higher yield in less time. It is also a well-opened plant to facilitate the harvest. The tracking and accessibility of the fruit are therefore simplified. These fruits are homogeneous, of thick caliber, and present a beautiful and bright dark green color. Such characteristics are in line with the consumption criteria of the French market́. Finally, the Liniac variety has a good fruit conservation potential which limits post-harvest waste as well,” explains David Madiot.
This new variety is also available in organic seeds.
