French seed breeder dedicating a department to vertical farming

“We are announcing a new division of Voltz Maraîchage, dedicated to vertical farming customers: Voltz Vertical Farming. We have established selection criteria with our customers and developed a specific range of seeds based on those criteria,” says Solène Voltz, the team manager.

Voltz Maraîchage has recently announced its expansion into the vertical farming sector and has just launched an e-commerce website for its vertical farming segment. The French seed company already has multiple varieties in the pipeline and plants to release in the coming months. Vertical farms will be able to purchase seeds directly from the website, although sales representatives will be readily available to assist clients in selecting the appropriate varieties, receiving and paying invoices, requesting quotes, and receiving samples.

“We are currently focusing on herbs, leafy greens, and microgreens but will also be adding edible flowers soon and are beginning to develop fruiting crops like tomatoes and cucumbers for vertical farms,” explains Solène. “The cosmetics industry is also up and coming, so we might be looking into that.”

Identifying crop criteria in collaboration with growers
Voltz Vertical Farming works with vertical farms to identify key traits such as resistance, high yield, short harvest cycle, and good flavor. As Solène explains, Voltz Maraîchage is part of Graines Voltz, the French leader and one of the first independent European distributors of flower and vegetable seeds and seedlings for professionals. But it is small enough to remain adaptable, which is helping the team and sales representatives to look at the specific needs of vertical farms and adapt themselves accordingly.

Voltz Vertical Farming currently has seven sales representatives that span the globe, and they encourage vertical farms to reach out to them to get more information and potentially organize a site visit so that the company understands the farm’s unique challenges and opportunities.
