Green Staples Collective Ltd, founded by Adowa Koren, launched their first urban farming education pilot program in September 2022 at GreenHills Academy in Kigali, Rwanda. An achievement that CEO Adowa is very proud of. She explains how the company is a multifaceted Eco-Environmental business.
"I taught 120 six-year-old children one day a week over a six-week period; teaching them about Urban farming through microgreens. As exhausting as it was, I am so pleased to know that 95% of the children learned about new vegetables, what microgreens are, what they can do for the body, and how to grow them and eat them. I am very proud of that success."
According to Adowa, the staff and parents also expressed their delight in the children's positive progress and their ability to understand a new concept of growing vegetables. Currently, Adowa and her company are trying to gain sponsorships, grants, and investors to bring their program to other schools across Rwanda and throughout the continent.
"We want to use mobile education buses to reach rural areas and cities, so people can come and learn about everyday eco-practices, participate in urban farming lessons, and learn about sustainability. They will also learn some English during the courses, as this seems to be a barrier that many locals face, and they want to better understand farming books, manuals, documentaries, online materials, methods, and procedures. We're now trying to implement the program across Africa as we feel it's vital that we continue to deliver education in eco-awareness to prepare children for the future," Adowa Koren concludes.
