By 2040, Swiss greenhouses are to be heated without fossil fuels. At an event of the Swiss Agricultural Journalists Association (SAJ) in Buchs, VSGP director Matija Nuic pointed out the association's goals. By the end of 2030, greenhouses should run without fossil fuels for 80% and by the end of 2040 for 100%. It is a strategy that is challenging, as VSGP director Matija Nuic pointed out.
Some progress has already been made with measures such as heat shields or better insulation, Nuic told lid.ch. This way, CO2 emissions per square meter have been reduced by 35%, he said. "We were able to implement a lot with these economic measures, but we asked ourselves where we could still get more out of this," Nuic explained. He said that when the association started to look into this more intensively, they recognized that this was also what customers and consumers wanted. "We have to deliver added value. If we can show that a tomato or a cucumber from Switzerland is more sustainable in terms of energy use, that's a good sales argument."
