Students at the Babonneau Primary School are now set to benefit from the sale and consumption of vegetables planted and reaped by them at their school, thanks to the support of Sagicor.
On Friday, December 9th, the school officially re-opened its greenhouse, which was refurbished earlier this year after a $6,000 donation from the insurance and financial company, as part of its efforts to support the St. Lucian Government’s School Feeding Programme.
The ribbon cutting took place one month after torrential rain impacted the island on November 7th, causing significant flooding, which wiped out the vegetable crops planted by the students and teachers. Since that unfortunate event, students returned to the greenhouse to re-plant tomato and cucumber seedlings.
The principal of the school, Ms. Tessa Bartlette, expressed her gratitude, as well as that of the students and teachers, for Sagicor’s assistance with the project, in addition to stating how the harvested produce would be used. “These vegetables will be included in the students’ meals, while a portion will be sold to earn funds to purchase other food items to complement the meals,” she said.
