October 31st was World Cities Day, and the theme this year was "Take action, from local to global," to achieve sustainable urban development. Meanwhile, Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 11 of the UN agenda is "Making cities inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable," which is precisely in line with "urban agriculture" to create urban resilience and liveability. For the past two years, Rooftop Republic has organized the "Farm the City" urban farming event to raise awareness of the food system and climate change challenges.
Rooftop Republic is a Hong Kong company that transforms underutilized areas into vibrant natural spaces by building and managing urban farms, creating nutritious organic food sources, and engaging and empowering communities for sustainable living styles.
Just recently, at Farm@Fortune shopping mall, Rooftop Republic facilitated an influential cross-sectoral collaboration with Fortune REIT and DBS Bank, which helped generate local, new and holistic ecosystems in the city. The rooftop organic farm at the top of the mall brings together employees, volunteers, schools, the community, and more, and together they enjoy the excitement of being in touch with nature for health improvements. Rooftop Republic is also reaching out to other stakeholders by donating healthy food harvested on the farm to food banks such as the Loyal Rates and Food Federation Foundation, restaurants, and those in need.
Our cities are experiencing unprecedented problems, but this opens the way for more cross-sectoral collaboration and the development of new solutions. Urban agriculture is critical to achieving a greener, more equitable, and sustainable city, addressing pressing issues and ensuring a better life for all in an urbanizing world.
