Chongming, Shanghai: High-tech produced vine tomatoes arrive at the market

More than 90% of the tomatoes bought on the market in Shanghai are from other places because the natural environment in Shanghai is not suitable for the growth of tomatoes. But with the support of technology, this situation could soon change. Yesterday, the first batch of vine tomatoes from Chongming came into the market, and small locally-produced tomatoes will increasingly appear in supermarkets.

Recently, the largest and most technologically advanced semi-enclosed smart greenhouse in China, the fruit and vegetable products produced by the Youyou Sino-Dutch Agricultural Innovation Park, began to arrive on the market.

This batch of vegetables and fruits produced on Chongming Island, with their own Dutch origin, is pollution-free because of the growing environment. Surrounded by advanced technologies, these products are not only green and free-of-washing but also have a balanced quality and taste. Consumers can purchase the products from Olé, Lianhua, JD.com, and other channels.

It is understood that the new products listed this time mainly include cucumbers, tomatoes, and bell peppers. At Olé of Grand Gateway Shanghai, the vine tomatoes are particularly eye-catching, and each bunch is strictly limited to 12-14 pieces. This is achieved by horticultural means during the planting period in order to ensure that the tomato fruit shape and ripening time are uniform, coupled with the precise control of water, fertilizer, temperature, humidity, and light conditions in a standardized growing environment.

According to the Youyou Sino-Dutch Agricultural Innovation Park, most of the small tomatoes currently sold in the terminal market come from Gansu, Heilongjiang, Hainan, and other places, and the small tomatoes that are produced locally in Shanghai account for less than 10%. In particular, vine tomatoes are planted in Heilongjiang and Gansu.

It takes about 4-7 days for long-distance transportation to Shanghai and then to the terminal. When harvesting, considering the transportation distance, the ripeness of fruits is low. However, in Chongming, direct harvesting and delivery on the same day can be realized, the freshness is more guaranteed, and the fruits picked after natural ripening are also more delicious.

In addition, these fruits and vegetables follow the standards of the EU's GAP certification system and are grown in strict accordance with European production processes. From seed, they are carefully cared for, they live in a greenhouse with a constant temperature of 25°C, and are irrigated with treated natural rainwater. The water quality can reach standards of drinking water, and plants enjoy precise irrigation with 95% accuracy, using biotechnology to prevent and control pests and diseases, which is naturally healthier.

All vegetable seeds are high-quality varieties imported from high-quality breeding companies around the world, and their taste is better than similar products on the market. For example, tomatoes are sweet, sour, and juicy, cucumbers are more crunchy, and there is no bitterness even if they are eaten raw; and bell peppers are not only miniature and colorful but also can be eaten raw immediately. At present, consumers can buy these vegetables produced by Youyou through online and offline channels such as Bailian, Olé, and JD.com.

In addition, in the second phase of the Sino-Dutch Agricultural Innovation Park, a fruit tree and vegetable picking area of 160,000 square meters has been built, planting citrus, loquat, grapes, peaches, strawberries, watermelons, and other special fruits, with an estimated annual production capacity of 500 tons of fresh fruits.
