Shouguang, Shandong: the capital of vegetables in China

Shouguang, Shandong, enjoys the reputation of being "the capital of vegetables in China." It has the largest vegetable trading center in China. From seed research and development, seedling cultivation, planting management, sales, and processing to vegetable quality standard verification, the vegetable industry in Shouguang has formed a complete industrial system. Various types of agricultural companies can be found there.

Winter warm greenhouses can be seen everywhere in Shouguang. This kind of greenhouse is cheaper than a glass greenhouse, but the effect is remarkable. The lighting area is large, and the heating is fast. The semi-basement structure is adopted to effectively prevent cold corrosion in front of the greenhouse. Because the greenhouse wall is thick and the back slope is slightly thicker, the thermal insulation effect is perfect. The disadvantage is that the utilization rate of soil resources is too low, and one mu of greenhouses needs to cover an area of two mu.

The covering material is mainly a PO anti-drip film. In addition, insulation quilts are added, and some sheds also use double-layer insulation quilts for thermal insulation work.

As the capital of vegetables, Shouguang also gathers many local vegetable breeding companies. Breeders are constantly exploring and striving to keep pace with the international frontier. Local varieties such as chili peppers and tomatoes have been continuously innovated, and the yield, taste, and flavor have continued to be improved.

China (Shouguang) International Vegetable Science and Technology Expo (hereinafter referred to as "Vegetable Expo") was founded in 2000 and is regularly held in Shouguang Vegetable High-tech Demonstration Park from April 20 to May 30 every year. It has been held for the 23rd edition so far.

The exhibition is organized based on "one hall, one model," and modern cultivation technologies such as aerosol culture and hydroponics can be seen in the exhibition hall.

More than 100 kinds of gourd vegetables are cultivated and displayed through more than 20 kinds of gallery gardening modes and more than 20 technologies. There are various gourds and fruits in different forms, such as bottle gourds, pumpkins, and hanging gourds, outlining a beautiful pastoral picture.

Biobest from Belgium also has a base in Shouguang, focusing on bumblebee pollination technology and IPM biological control. Bumblebee pollination can stabilize the fruit set rate and quality of crops and reduce the occurrence of gray mold.

As the capital of vegetables, Shouguang puts unique decorative paintings on the streets, with spray paintings of leafy vegetables, eggplants, peppers, and tomatoes everywhere, highlighting the city's charm.
