Tarragon introduced at Fratelli Cafaro 1989

Tarragon is the new product part of the range of Fratelli Cafaro 1989, a company located in Eboli (Salerno). Each year the company, which is already growing 8 products (rosemary, sage, thyme, mint, dill, coriander, smooth and curly parsley), widens its range of products available all year round.

The Cafaro family

"We added tarragon after receiving many requests from our clients, especially from the Netherlands, Belgium and Great Britain. Two hectares have been planted so far, but they are destined to increase in the future," reported Walter Cafaro, sales manager at Fratelli Cafaro 1989.

The company was founded by brothers Pompeo and Claudio Cafaro in 1989 as a nursery garden and now specializes in the production of aromatic herbs on around 50 hectares and baby leaves on at least 60 hectares of greenhouses (arugula, lamb's lettuce, green and red lettuce, cress, baby spinach, bull's blood, red chard, rumex).

Roughly 95% of the produce is exported, mainly to Europe thanks to collaborations with big retail chains, retailers, H&R, general markets and fresh-cut packagers.

Walter comments the current situation saying that "the aromatic herb market keeps on growing and evolving, and is more stable than that of baby leaves. Another interesting thing is that prices are always certain and demand is ongoing. However, in order to be competitive, one needs to be able to provide good quality, equal or superior to that of the produce from Africa, the leading continent when it comes to this segment. The most popular products are currently rosemary and sage and demand from Europe is good."

"The baby leaf market is instead a bit slow. The war has affected demand, especially from Ukraine, as was to be expected. However, demand is usually slow anyway this time of year, as our productions have reached the end of the season and local productions are about to begin. What is more, our volumes halve this time of year as we proceed with field solarization."

Vivaldi is the company's brand for salad

The products hold the GlobalGAP, IFS, QS, Tesco, Sedex and Leaf certifications.

Fratelli Cafaro also introduced "a new packaging solution for parsley, now available in bunches destined to European retailers. Considering the fact that this solution increases product shelf-life and is quick, we are considering using it for dill too."

"As for the next season, we are looking to extend the production of baby leaves with 25 hectares of greenhouses. In the future we would also like to start growing basil to meet the growing demand."
