The first Purple Pride aubergines have back on the shelves at Dutch retailers from last weekend. The growers' association has noticed that Dutch retailers are switching to Dutch products earlier and earlier in the season.
Retailers are thus responding to the demand from shoppers, who increasingly want to know where their food comes from. Transparency and sustainable production are also becoming more important to retailers.
Specialties in own hands
The Dutch aubergine season officially started with the harvest of the purple aubergine. From the end of March until the end of September, more varieties of aubergine will also be available, such as Graffiti, Mini Graffiti, or Nasu aubergine. Each aubergine has its own characteristics and suitable flavor combinations. In 2022, Purple Pride grower Gebr. van Duijn in Oosterland will once again be in control of the production of specialty aubergines.
Expansion of acreage
With more than 50% of the Dutch aubergine production, Purple Pride is the largest aubergine grower in North-Western Europe. The extension at Purple Pride grower Greenbrothers in Zevenbergen will increase the acreage to 55 hectares by 2022. With 16 hectares, Greenbrothers is responsible for almost 9.5 million Purple Pride aubergines a year. An increase in scale is essential in order to be able to justify in-depth investments in sustainability and to guarantee business continuity.
