The storm weekend saw fierce waves on the water basin at Kwekerij Noordhoek in Kapelle in Zeeland, the Netherlands, but the installation of floating solar panels did not budge. This was despite the fact that it was quite the raging storm, as witnessed by the breaking of around 40 windows in the greenhouse.
The grower made the following video of the system that was realized last year by Albers Alligator and Centrica Business Solutions.
Martin Spekle, Albers Alligator: "If we look at the map with the highest wind gusts, the wind in Kapelle was quite strong, with highest wind gusts of 127 km/h, which is equal to 12 Beaufort.
We also spoke to Henk Verhage of Kwekerij Noordhoek. "I went to have a look anyway. It was so wild. When I stood on the edge of the basin, I was a little worried. But there was nothing wrong. When the storm subsided, I went for a walk around the basin. Of course, I wanted to check that everything was still in place. And yes, it was as if no storm had ever happened at all."
The installation in calm weather
It's clear that there was a huge storm. Henk rarely suffers damage during bad weather. Sometimes a window or two is broken. But this time it was different. About 40 windows were broken in his greenhouse. Henk: "That says something about how heavy the winds were here. Fortunately, the panels on the basin were calculated and installed to withstand wind force 11.
