The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of production systems-(organic-ORG or conventional-CON) and growing cycle (fall-winter or spring-summer) of cos lettuce (Lactuca sativa L. var. longifolia 'Parris Island') and green onion (Allium cepa 'Sturon') as companion planting, on the mineral composition.
Lettuce from CON systems contained more Ca, Mg, Mn, Fe, Cu compared to ORG production. Lettuce plants in both production systems had a higher content of K, B, Zn, and Fe than onion. ORG grown onion at both growing cycles had a higher content of all macro-and micro-elements (except Cu) than the CON grown ones. The general order of the mineral content in both plants was K>Ca>Mg>Fe>Mn>B>Zn>Cu.
Companion planting can result in an increase in the productivity of vegetables per unit area.
