Greenhouse in Shanghai successfully plants bananas on water

At Kaitaiyu Base in Shanghai, a special greenhouse has been built inside another greenhouse for tropical fruits. Although it can be cold in the winter, the temperature in the greenhouse can be kept at 10°C and even above in this way. Moreover, the greenhouse can be richly supplied with oxygen.

"The base has built a double model to create an environment with heat preservation, moisture retention, and high oxygen," Zhang Xinwan, head of the base, stated. The installation is an aquaponic one. He explains that the water on which the bananas are planted can produce fish, be used to plant aquatic plants, purify the water, and the excrement of the fish, shrimps, and crabs can be used as fertilizer for the banana plants.

In the banana greenhouse, there are many different varieties of bananas. The entire banana greenhouse covers an area of nearly 2 hectares, and the largest banana tree can produce nearly 50 kilograms of bananas. “Bananas are mostly grown in tropical regions, but here in Shanghai, there are no natural enemies, diseases, or insect pests. Thus, no pesticides are required. The bananas are harvested after ripening, and the taste will be sweeter and waxier.”
