On September 28th, 2021, the Innovation Award will be presented during the GreenTech fair at the RAI in Amsterdam. This is one of the leading horticultural fairs in the world. Biota Nutri is a Dutch company that develops and produces liquid organic fertilizers for growers worldwide. They are competing for the award with the Biota calculator.

Assisting growers worldwide with environmental improvements
Growers often use a standard calculator method to determine the amount of fertilizers they apply to their crops and plants. Making fertilizer (mainly nitrate) uses lots of natural gas and causes CO2 and NOx emissions, among other things. If you can replace that with fertilizers based on plants and non-fossil raw materials, you could avoid a lot of environmental pollution.
Helping growers switch to organic fertilizers
Previously, calculators could only be made using a supplier's calculation program, which resulted in calculations only for their brand of fertilizer. Biota Nutri makes the process of switching to organic fertilizers easier with their calculator method.
The Biota calculator creates independent results that are non-brand specific and can be used for all plants, herbs, vegetables, and flowers grown with irrigation systems, vertical farming, and hydroponic systems.
Competitor fertilizers can also be used
The calculation method itself is not unique. Every cultivation advisor has one, but only the calculator tool from Biota Nutri is applicable to all brands of fertilizers. The uniqueness is that you can calculate a fertilizer recipe with mineral and organic fertilizers. By means of a simple slide, you can mix the desired percentage of organic fertilizers. This makes it easier for growers to contribute to a better environment and to healthy food production.
The Biota Calculator makes it possible to create recipes from an extensive list of fertilizers from different brands. Growers can enter their custom cultivation advice or select standard advice and decide for themselves which fertilizers they want to include in their recipe.
The Calculator is available in English, Dutch, and soon also in Spanish and is freely available to Biota Nutri users. Others can also take out a subscription from 21 euros per month.
Origin of Biota Nutri
In 2017, entrepreneur and fertilizer specialist Peter Klein started developing 100% organic fertilizers from agriculture and horticulture residual flows. This not only greatly reduces CO2 emissions but also promotes soil health, while yields can be equal to those produced with mineral fertilizers. Biota Nutri wants to stimulate sustainable cultivation of vegetables and other crops with the production of these fertilizers. The company has been supplying their products to an organic lettuce producer in the United States.
