Coop Sole

"We aim to reach 50 hectares of berries over the next few years"

"Coop Sole has always focused on innovation in all its forms. Over the next few years, we aim at reaching 50 hectares of berries. In addition, we planned a productive area 5% larger for the strawberry campaign that will start in mid-November," reports Pietro Paolo Ciardiello, director of Coop Sole.

The Cooperativa Sole in Parete is one of the Italian pioneers when it comes to berry production, especially since it welcomes all new market challenges and is always ready to throw itself into new thrilling experiences.

"We will start the strawberry campaign in this area with remontant varieties, and then we will continue with fresh plants between January and June. We are working more and more to bring productions forward, not only when it comes to strawberries. We are confident for this campaign, considering the good feedback for Italian strawberries on both the domestic and foreign markets, although we are a little worried about sourcing labor."

"Overall, we have 30 hectares of raspberries, blackberries, and blueberries for this campaign. Raspberries are available all year round, while blackberries are available between May and October, and blueberries are available between May and early August. We are also working to increase blueberry volumes, thus prolonging the production period."

Coop Sole also produces a line of organic berries with a dedicated fully-compostable packaging.

Coop Sole has always been committed to cultivating products sustainable for the environment and consumers. All products must comply with the following requirements: good to eat, healthy and safe, plus they must come from ethical and responsible crops with a low environmental impact. To meet such needs, varietal innovation and the search for new production techniques are essential.

"The domestic and foreign markets appreciate Italian berries a lot, so much so that demand has been increasing over the past few years. We widened our range with 125 and 250 g packets of raspberries, blueberries, and blackberries and, to meet the needs of a few retailers, we have also introduced the 500 g option for blueberries. But there is still a lot to be done: we need to work and improve production techniques and get ready to welcome new market challenges."
