Ozone water for irrigation and produce treatments

Among the various products showcased at Macfrut, a series of devices to 'produce' ozone to sterilize irrigation water, perform treatments and for storage units were particularly popular. The company that develops this technology is Ecofarm Storti.

"Thanks to our technologies, ozone is produced on-site and is very effective against bacteria and pathogen fungi in both greenhouses and open fields. Ozone leaves no residues and is a powerful disinfectant," explains Enrico Storti.

Sterilizing irrigation water helps prevent diseases typical of soil fatigue both in open fields and greenhouses. "Our equipment must be installed on the irrigation system. Especially in greenhouses, water treatments are necessary to keep diseases under control."

In addition, an ozone generator can be applied to all spraying machines for leaf treatments. "It has been proven that using ozone reduces the use of pesticides by 40/50%."

It can also be useful in storage units. Ozone is capable of oxidizing ethylene, thus blocking the ripening signal. "The companies that usually employ ozone for storage tend to be the small ones, as they cannot afford large storage systems, those that store the produce for a few days after harvesting and those serving consumers directly."
