Spain: A fire on the Coast of Granada burned 80 hectares and damaged half a dozen greenhouses

A fire in Gualchos this weekend has burned down 80 hectares in the area of this municipality in the region of the Costa Granadina, causing damage to half a dozen greenhouses.

Antonia Antequera, the mayor of Gualchos-Castell de Ferro, said there was a critical moment on Saturday afternoon when the fire was fifty meters away from the homes in the El Romeral neighborhood. Fortunately, the situation was controlled following the Forest Fire Emergency Plan of the Autonomous Community (Infoca Plan).

The fire was also very close to the greenhouses, the mayor added. The fire's heat, however, affected half a dozen greenhouses. Fortunately, no structures suffered mishaps. Only the plastic strips of the greenhouses, i.e. the plastic side panels, were damaged.

Saturday afternoon's wind worsened the fire conditions, the mayor stated. "The wind varied. There was a strong offshore wind, which is hot, and made the fire jump. In fact, it jumped over the highway. The truth is that there were very complicated moments because the fire advanced very fast."
