In the first half of the last five years, Spanish tomato sales in the EU have fallen by 117.92 million kilos (-27.53%) and Dutch tomato sales have fallen by 77.56 million kilos (-21.05% ). In the same period, Moroccan tomato sales in the EU have increased by 35.44 million kilos (+ 15.85%) and Turkish sales have grown by 25.8 million kilos (+34.46%).
This data from Hortoinfo based on the statistical service Euroestacom (Icex-Eurostat) show that Spain and the Netherlands are losing more and more market share in the EU tomato market each year to Morocco and Turkey, at least in the first six months of each year.
Between January 1 and June 30, 2021, Spain sold 310.86 million kilos of tomatoes in the EU, a lower volume than the 428.27 million kilos it sold in the same period of 2017. In the first half of this year, the Netherlands sold 290.87 million kilos of tomatoes in the EU; 77.56 million kilos less than the 368.43 million kilos it sold in the EU in 2017.
Morocco has been increasing its tomato exports to the EU year after year, with a constant rise in the first six months of each year in the last five years. In the first half of 2021, Morocco sold 262.84 million kilos of tomatoes to the EU Member States, compared to 227.4 million kilos in 2017.
Turkish tomato sales to the EU were decreasing until 2019. Since then, they have been rebounding in the first half of each year, as the volume increased by 100.79% between the first semester of 2019 and the same period of 2021. In the last five years, Turkey has increased its tomato exports to the EU from 74.86 million kilos in 2017 to 100.66 million kilos in the first six months of 2021.
In general, tomato purchases by the Member States in the first six months of the year have fallen by 188.78 million kilos (-12.66%) between 2017 and 2021, going from 1,491.54 million kilos in the first half of 2017 to 1,302.76 million kilos in the first half of 2021.
